The Macallan, under the stewardship of Edrington, has proudly unveiled “Tales of The Macallan Volume II,” a prestigious addition to its Pioneers Range, commemorating pivotal figures in the brand’s illustrious history.

Crafted as a homage to Alexander Reid, the visionary founder of The Macallan, this second instalment in the series seeks to immortalise his legacy and unwavering commitment to the artistry of whisky-making, coinciding with the brand’s bicentennial milestone.

In 1824, Reid laid the cornerstone of The Macallan distillery on the hallowed grounds of Easter Elchies Estate in Speyside, espousing the belief that small stills were instrumental in yielding superior flavour and character—a principle enshrined in the brand’s enduring “six pillars” philosophy.

Helmed by The Macallan’s lead whisky maker, Euan Kennedy, this extraordinary expression was distilled in 1949 and meticulously bottled in 2022.

Kennedy remarked, “Tales of The Macallan Volume II is a tribute to our founder Alexander Reid, whose commitment to quality and craftsmanship established the pursuit of uncompromised excellence that has continued to guide successive generations of The Macallan’s whisky makers, like myself, to this day.”

Exhibiting a rich palette of bronzed oak tones, underscored by subtle red hues—a nod to Reid’s Scots heritage, where “The Red One” reflects the original meaning of his surname—this singular malt whisky exudes an unparalleled complexity nurtured through decades of patient maturation.

With a lingering smokiness reminiscent of whiskies from Reid’s era, this release serves as a poignant tribute to his enduring legacy as The Macallan celebrates its bicentenary.

Encased in an exquisite Lalique crystal decanter, discreetly nestled within an opulent almanack meticulously crafted by London-based artisans Shepherds, Sangorski & Sutcliffe, and Zaehnsdorf, each chapter of the book unfolds Reid’s narrative, complemented by evocative illustrations by British artist Andrew Davidson.

To coincide with the launch, The Macallan has unveiled a captivating zoetrope-style animation featuring Davidson’s artwork, set to an evocative score by Scottish composer Craig Armstrong.

Limited to just 344 decanters, with a recommended retail price of US$89,000, Tales of The Macallan Volume II epitomises the pinnacle of whisky craftsmanship and storytelling, embodying The Macallan’s unwavering pursuit of excellence.

Tales of The Macallan Volume II marks a significant milestone in the brand’s 200-year legacy of whisky-making, paying homage to its founder, Alexander Reid, and reaffirming its position as a beacon of excellence in the world of single malt whisky.
